Wells Junior Open 2011 Draws
Wells Tennis Club Championships 2010 Report
September 2010
There was a good turnout for the championships which were played over several weekends in September in almost perfect weather conditions.
The ladies’ singles final between Binkie Heather and Carol Stockman, provided sheer tension with Binkie going 2 games up at the start of the first set before being ground down as Carol got her familiar volleying game in to motion.
In the men’s singles Gary Moule nearly gained a game from young Sam Edwards in the second set but got blasted at the crucial moment.
Play was dramatic and the joy for the spectators endless in the Ladies’ doubles . Mary Harrington and Caroline Moule benefiting from years of league play, gained a straight sets victory against Clare Mather and Tasha Smith
In the highly competitive men’s doubles championships Ed and Derk had saved 3 match points in the semi final from previous champions of many previous years Ray and Alan but in the final it was David and Finian who kept their nerve to win in a cliff hanger of a final set.
The finals culminated in a 3 set mixed doubles marathon where the youngest player in the championships, Erika Cotton paved the way for her Dad, Dave to become double champion wining this as well as the men’s doubles, despite the efforts of Caroline and Andrzej, one of the clubs most improved adults demon performance at the net.
The whole championships across the summer and in the finals seems to have been played with a real focus on enjoyment and we were rewarded for this with an excellent standard of competitive tennis and more than a touch of glamour from the up and coming members of the club in the finals.
Congratulations to our new Champions:
Carol Stockman, Sam Edwards, Erika Cotton, Finian Orme, Caroline Moule, Mary Harrington and our double champion David Cotton.
Thanks also to our finalists for their gallant efforts as shown in the table below and Brian Smith and Ray Brook for keeping an eye on the ladies from the umpire’s chair. Final results below

Wells Tennis Club Singles Ladder Competition
At the end of the Mixed doubles Club Champioship match there was also an award made to the winner of the Tennis Singles ladder.
This mixed event has been running for the past year between around 20 of the most enthusiastic singles players of the club. At one time it looked like no-one would catch Ed Pearce, who led for most of the time. In just the last few weeks he was caught and overtaken by the final winner Andrzej Piecuch, who made a great run up the ladder improving his play greatly over the past months.
