Wells Junior Open 2011 Draws

Jack and Steve Harris. Lucinda and Richard Manning

Parent & Child Competition
June 2010

The tennis action at Wimbledon had a serious rival on Sunday with the annual Wells Parent and Child Tournament and BBQ. Under the expert organisation and guidance of Club coach Stephen Pearce, 8 parents and 8 youngsters took to the courts. The children ranged in ages from Salvador Luther aged 6 playing some gutsy shots on his home mini court to very able Juniors who be well placed in the Adult teams.

To ensure some exciting matches the pairings, organised into two boxes, played each other for points. The final score for each pair gave a ranking which then allowed each to play those similarly ranked in the opposing box. With everyone playing the same number of games competition was fierce as points were hotly contested which made for some exciting action.

The top two in their respective boxes were Lucinda and Richard Manning and Jack and Steven Harris. With similarly matched pairings, the final demonstrated some exhilarating shots and play resulted in a tie break where Lucinda and Richard held their nerve and won the final vital points. Thanks must go to Stephen who arranged such a brilliant tournament.

Wells Tennis Club – President’s Men’s Tournament

On Friday 28th May 18 players did battle in the annual President's Men's Tournament at Wells Tennis Club. Pairings were drawn from a hat and amidst sporadic drizzle the gladiators exchanged blows of gratuitous violence and exquisite beauty. The appetites and thirsts of the bloodied warriors were quenched with BBQ blackened morsels of meat and beer. At the end of the closely fought round robin matches, the winners with the most number of games were Chris Sherringham and Ray Brook. As Ray is also the President, an unofficial stewards' enquiry will now be instigated to discover if any dastardly corruption has occurred! Nonetheless a great time was had by all. LONG LIVE THE PRESIDENT!"
