Wells Junior Open 2011 Draws
Wells Juniors Triumph in Open Tennis Tournament
April 2010
Over 80 youngsters from as far afield as Essex and Cornwall competed in a smoothly run singles tournament hosted by the Tennis club during perfect weather conditions over the weekend. The referee was David Greenwood and with a 50% increase in the number of entrants this year, the high standard of the skill shown by Wells Juniors was a credit to Head Coach Dean Cornish and his team. Rising stars James Edwards and Cameron Lambden gave impressive performances to win the Boys Under 12s and Under 14s trophies whilst Sam Edwards and Vanessa Brill both maintained their consistent form to take the Under 16s Boys and the Under 14 Girls titles.

Brothers keep it in the Family
April 2010
Brothers Samuel and James Edwards are rapidly becoming stars of the Tennis circuit. As members of Wells Tennis club, both triumphed at the Wells Junior Open Tennis Tournament taking the U16s and U12s title respectively. Both are coached by Dean Cornish and represent Somerset County with Samuel competing for the under 18s at Ilford in London last February and James, who first began playing for the county when he was under 10, currently holding the number 2 position for his age group. Samuel, the more powerful of the two, won various LTA organised G4 tournaments during the winter season and recently got through to the quarter finals in the Bristol Hardcourt Championships. He is regarded as one of the best players at Wells Tennis club and regularly plays for the mixed team. James who trains in total for 6 hours a week, like his brother takes part in tournaments throughout the South West several times a month. He won the Cheddar tournament last October and has been runner up in various LTA organised county events. Wells Tennis club are very proud to be nurturing such natural talent.
EASTER FUN TOURNAMENT April 5th 2010
On Easter Monday twenty members of the club braved the overcast weather to play in a very enjoyable mixed doubles fun tournament followed by a buffet lunch arranged by Ruth and Brian Clarke. In order to cater for the varying levels of ability, Brian had devised a very intriguing handicap system which allowed each individual to play for their own points. Although puzzled at first, players soon began to appreciate that it gave a huge incentive for the more skillful to play competitively whilst allowing the less experienced to raise their game without the fear of being outclassed.
Play consisted of 15 minute matches over two hours . Dianne Wiseman won the ladies’ section with newcomer Phyllis Jennings as runner up. Steve Harris won the men’s section and Martyn Osborne was the runner up. The winners were each presented with a large Easter egg and all participants with a mini egg. All gave their thanks to Brian and Ruth for organising an excellent event.
