President's Mixed Tournament - November 2009
Nine couples battled it out in this Wells annual tournament held at Millfied in the great indoor tennis facilities.
All entrants benefited from the wealth of Christmas nibbles on offer, including home-made biscuits, sausage rolls, cake and fruit, as well as the traditional mulled wine.
In the event there was some very close play in the three qualification rounds - and one or two slight surprises. Heading their three groups, and thus winning through to the final round, went Brian and Tasha Smith, Anthea Freemantle and Martyn Holliday, and Sue Martello and Mike Lintern. The a league round winner was dependent on the final match. Sue Martello and Mike Lintern triumphed over Anthea Freemantle and Martyn Holliday to win the shield.
Thanks are due to the head coach Dean Cornish the tournament organiser, and Stephen Pearce the Wells coach who ran the tournament on the day.
Pictured are all the contestants, and the winners Mike Lintern and Sue Martello being awarded the shield from Stephen Pearce.

Wells Junior Open 2011 Draws
President Vs Chairman Shield
Sept 09
In glorious mild, sunny conditions on Sunday the traditional Wells Tennis Club President versus Chairman Club Shield was played. 20 players each playing with their allotted partners battled out against each other, in 9 rounds of high caliber, and fun tennis. At the end the scores were totted up and the Presidents team was found to have convincingly won. As an additional treat all the players were invited for a superb meal at the Presidents family home. Everyone enjoyed the home-made food and thanks are due to Sarah and her family for cooking and hosting such a superb occasion.
GRAND OPENING OF THE CLUB HOUSE
September 2009
Wells Tennis Club was pleased to welcome the Mayor of Wells Christina Borastero to their club for the official opening of the new club house. The evening was also a good opportunity to welcome the latest new members to the club. Christina was keen to hear all about the club and stayed the whole evening to the clubs pleasure. The opening was carried out on the very popular Thursday evening club session where all courts were in full swing and plenty of tennis was enjoyed, followed by a BBQ and celebratory drinks. The members are over the moon to finally have their own improved facilities and this is with great thanks to the present committee.
PARENT & CHILD COMPETITION
Rain didn't stop play
Despite some occasional downpours for much of the time the annual Wells Tennis Club Parent and Child competition was played in some good bright conditions. The new clubhouse was put to good use as a shelter during the rain. The tasty BBQ was well run by Lene and Dave Cotton.
The competition was run in two sections. One for the under 10 players with their parents. One for the under 16 players with their parents. There were 5 pairs in the u10 section, and 7 pairs in the u16 section. In both sections there was some great play and very close long rallies.
To make it more interesting the adults had to play all strokes double handed and serve under-arm. This took some competitors by surprise, however most took it in their stride.
In the u10 competition there was a close final in which Owen and Greg Griffiths won 3:2 in a sudden death deuce against Luke and Gary Moule.
In the u16 competition there was an extremely tight exhibition match final, played out between Jasmine and Dean Cornish against Vanessa Brill and Tomas Simko. This too went to a final game, and a sudden death deuce. Vanessa and Tomas emerged the winners, holding their nerve and righting the previous result earlier in the competition stage, when Jasmine and Dean had won.
Thanks are due to Lynne Cornish for some fine tournament organisation.

Wimbledon qualifying!
Just before Wimbledon was set to kick off around 50 enthusiasts from the Wells and surrounding area climbed on board a luxury coach for a visit to the Wimbledon qualifying tournament, run at Roehampton, London. Some ideal weather awaited them and a brilliant day was had, with some tremendous tennis matches viewable at very close quarters. Some top players were playing at the event including Xiavier Malisse (BEL), Taylor Dent (USA) and Chris Eaton (GM). The youngsters from the Wells club enjoyed watching these players and collecting their autographs. Thanks are due to the head coach Dean, and his wife Lynne , for arranging and providing this opportunity.
