Mark Orme Challenge Cup
On Sunday 21 June, Wells Tennis Club players were competing for the Mark Orme Challenge Cup. A team of 8 senior players took on the juniors and intermediates. The match format was ladies and men's doubles followed by mixed pairs. A dominating performance was exercised by the 'younger' generation with powerful play and very accurate fast ground strokes. The seniors just couldn't repeat on last years success. A jubilant youth team recorded a 17-4 points win. Well done!

It was the largest Junior Open Tournament wells has held todate with 53 junior competitors coming far and wide (one entrant was from shropshire). The weather was grey to begin with, as the weekend went on the forecast improved steadily. The finals held on Sunday were to glorious sunshine. The standard of tennis was excellent throughout, and David Greenwood did a great job as the tournament referee.

SUCCESSFUL SEASON OPENING EASTER COMPETITION
A new clubhouse, newly painted courts, blue sky and sun combined for a perfect start to the tennis season at Wells Tennis Club. The annual Easter Monday Fun Tournament took place with 20 members keen to win the diet breaking easter eggs. The fiendish handicap scoring system was meant to ensure that everyone would finish with the same score at the end of the tournament. Luckily it didn't work out that way as after 2 hours of nearly continuous play, punctuated by the sound of a whistle and a change of partners every 15 minutes, the worthy, tired and slightly confused winners emerged. Only 6 points separated all the players in both the ladies and mens sections. For the ladies Binkie Heather just pipped it from Tasha Smith on the spin of a racket after they both finished on equal scores. The men's was more clear cut with Martyn Holliday winning by 1 point from runner up Brian Smith. Thanks to Brian and Ruth Clarke for organising the tournament, including the food and drink, and Nicki Kent for blowing the whistle and keeping the scores.
Pop Quiz
A pop quiz was held on the 5th December to help raise money. There was light hearted rounds of pop entertainment from the 60s onwards and a ploughmans supper was enjoyed in between. Overall a great evening of fun. The night was well attended with plenty of friendly rivalry. A significant amount of money was raised for the club. Thanks to Nick Horton for organising the event.
