Wells A Team Promoted After Tense Finish.
Wells A topped a fantastic season with a superb win over their closest rivals, Clevedon B to pip them to the top spot. The Wells team finished as champions of Division 3 by a single point, winning promotion to Division 2. The final match saw the first pairing of Sam Edwards and Seth Cunningham winning both rubbers in straight sets 6-0 6-3 and 6-3 6-4. Second pair Alex Hudson and Nick Showering also won convincingly in straight sets 6-1 6-3 and 7-6 6-4.
Wells team captain Ed Green said: “Hats off to the guys in the last match. What looked like a nail-biter was turned into a comfortable win, with Wells playing some great tennis. A fantastic win and a great season.”

Wells B Status Hangs In Balance
Wells B Team lost their penultimate match, going down 4-9 to Clevedon C at home last week. A disappointing season will be made worse if it ends in relegation, meaning the results from the final rescheduled matches remain critical.

Promotion Still Possible for Wells D
Meanwhile in Division 7, local rivalry was intense as Wells C and D Teams battled it out for City bragging rights. The C Team had a disastrous start to the season, losing the first three games. A great comeback followed and they remained unbeaten for the remaining 7 matches. They therefore needed a 10-0 win in their final match against Winscombe B to overhaul the D's into second place .
All looked well when second pair Ray Brooks and Nick Horton won both their rubbers: 6-4 6-0 and 6-4 6-0. Unfortunately the A Pairing of Karl Tucker and Matt Goatcher went down 2-6 6-7 but went on to beat the 2nd pair 6-2 6-2. Final tally was a good win of 8-2, but that proved two points short of displacing the D's, despite the D Team losing their final match 8-3 to Division champions Cheddar B in torrential rain.
Mike Lintern and Chris Sherring won their 1st rubber 6-4, 6-4 but lost the 2nd 6-1, 6-4. The Wells 2nd pair of Martyn Holliday and Dave Mills had two closely contested matches both of which were lost on a tie-break. An impressive season for the D Team could still end in promotion as runners up, depending on whether Backwell C can score 10 points or not from their last match…
