Wells Junior Open 2011 Draws
New President but Same Membership for Wells Tennis Club
FEBRUARY 2011
New President Brian Clarke was voted in at Wells Tennis Club’s AGM last week. The same meeting also confirmed that membership fees would be kept the same for the coming year. The new President takes over from club stalwart and former men’s champion, Ray Brook, who said: “The club thanks Brian for doing a great job as our Treasurer over the last few years. I’m sure he’ll be just as good as our President!”
Brian said: “I’m pleased to accept this role, but even more pleased that we’ve been able to keep membership fees level for next year. Wells is a great club to be part of, with a good balance of competitive tennis and people playing for fun. We’d encourage anyone interested in playing to come along and try a club session – all ages and abilities are welcome!”

Wells Tennis Club Presidents Tournament 2011
MAY 2011
The old stalwarts, past winners, real contenders and young hopefuls turned out for the 2011 Wells Tennis Club Presidents Tournament in fine conditions on Friday 20 May. An open men’s doubles competition for members, pairings were drawn at random from all entrants and a short sets format (best of five games) applied.
The evening’s tennis was played at a relentless pace. With back to back sets and some fierce rallies being accompanied by some chirpy (and some not so chirpy!) banter, some leading contenders and past winners, including ex-president Ray Brook and Ed Pearce and club team regulars Brian Smith and Bruce Preston, began to drop out of the running.
The mid point lead established by previous winner and A team regular Richard Hole, playing alongside this year’s new winter league captain Dave Mills began to look unassailable and they went on to prove it so by not losing a single set. A late challenge by D team stars John Valentine and Mike Lintern was not enough, as they finished runners up by two games. So a new name alongside a previous champion on the trophy.
